European Parliament and Council approves new Commission after a long week of hearings and compromises between the S&D, EPP and Renew groups.

The new Commission starts its term from 1 December 2024 to 31 October 2029.

The European Parliament (EP) and Council have both given the green light for Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission to start its work on 1 December 2024.

The EP had taken a plenary vote on 27 November, resulting in 370 votes in favour, 282 against and 36 abstentions from lawmakers in Strasbourg, obtaining approval from only 53% of all votes cast, the slimmest majority in history for a new Commission. This came after internal squabbles among the three pro-eu centrists groups whose loose alliance have traditionally controlled the majority in the EP. The EPP, the S&D and Renew attempted to patch their differences with a nine-point statement entitled “platform cooperation statement” here.
