First investigation under the EU’s Foreign Subsidies Regulation involves the United Arab Emirates.

The European Commission has launched, for the first time, an in-depth investigation under its Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR) to one of UAE’s state-owned companies Emirates Telecommunications Group Company PJSC (e&). This carries implications to state-owned enterprises or sovereign wealth and pension funds that are involved in mergers or acquisitions in the EU.

Following the trade dispute brought by Malaysia against the European Union at the World Trade Organisation, the dispute settlement panel has since issued its first ruling, agreeing with some, but not all, of the charges brought by Malaysia against the EU, as well as France and Lithuania.
